How to play Hand Cricket

The rules, exactly as your gang played them.

  1. 1The toss: both players shoot out fingers and one calls "odd" or "even". Add both hands — if the total matches the call, that player wins the toss.
  2. 2The toss winner chooses to bat or bowl.
  3. 3Every ball, both players shoot a number on one hand: 1 to 5, or 6 with the thumb if your school allowed it.
  4. 4Different numbers? The batter scores the runs they showed. Same number? Out — that's the wicket.
  5. 5Once the batter is out, swap. The other player bats and chases the target.
  6. 6Chase it and you win. Fall short and you lose. A tie means a super over, obviously.

Where it came from

Odd-Eve was never really a game — it was the referee. Who bats first, who fields, who runs to the shop, who owns up to the broken window. Whole afternoons were decided by two fists and a shouted word, and nobody ever thought to write the rules down because everybody already knew them by the time they could count to five.
